Health - Tip of the Month

First let me tell you a little about myself. I have been married for 37 years. For 30 of those I have been a mother of two, and for the last 5 years, a proud grandmother of 3. I have been practicing a holistic approach to health, nutrition and lifestyle for this entire time. I have also been a massage therapist since 1990 and have spent many of those years compiling natural remedies for the relief of pain and discomfort associated with life's ailments and injuries. ARNICA MONTANA

Arnica Montana has been around for centuries. From Switzerland, the Tyrol, and the Andes mountains in South America, it has been used for years to assist in healing from severe falls. It was collected, dried and stored carefully for use in emergencies and became known as "the fall herb". It is a must to keep on hand.

Apply topically to any bump, closed injury, sprain or strain as soon as possible after it has occurred. It will assist in decreasing the inflammation process, help to prevent bruising, and significantly decrease the amount of pain you might feel.

I have applied Arnica on myself and many of my family members for years and have seen it work every time; especially on my Grandchildren of toddler age, who are so prone to those head bumps. By applying it immediately, it seems to stop the bump from swelling and bruising. For even better results, combine the topical crème with an oral homeopathic Arnica formula. Even if the injury has already occurred, the applications mentioned above will also help. In both scenarios, Arnica helps in the healing process as it stimulates the immune systems' response to 'heal itself'.

My favorite product is Arnicare Gel by Boiron. They also make a tablet formula that comes in a small, easy to carry container. I like to keep some of both in my bag all the times.

In addition, if you have it handy, applying ice at the time of occurrence will be an added benefit. Yet don't forget with ice, never leave it on for more than 15 minutes at a time. It can be re-applied every hour or so for even greater results.
